February is Heart Month

We’re shining a spotlight on women’s heart and brain health

Nearly 37% of people in Nova Scotia don’t know that heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of premature death in women. But this Heart Month, Heart & Stroke is working to change that.

Awareness of women’s heart and brain health is key to ensuring better outcomes for women living with heart disease and stroke.

With your help, we want to start a conversation about the lack of awareness and understanding around women’s heart and brain health.

Did you know. . .

  • Women face unique risks for heart disease and stroke at different points in their lives, like during pregnancy and menopause
  • Women are less likely than men to receive the treatments and medications they need for their heart and brain health
  • Women can experience different signs and symptoms of a heart attack, such as shortness of breath, nausea and discomfort in the neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or upper belly
  • More than half of women who experience a heart attack have their symptoms go unrecognized

Some progress has been made to better support women’s heart and brain health, but much more needs to be done.

That’s why this Heart Month, we encourage you to join our conversation about women’s heart and brain health. Together, we can help beat health inequity and ensure that every woman gets the care they need.
